Anzalone Among Old Timers Honorees

Joe Anzalone will be among the local honorees at the 66th annual Stamford Old Timers Athletic Association dinner.

Other local honorees are Bruno Amato, Jack Baker, Don Delmazzio, Steve Karp, Larry Miller and Rich Moavero.

The event will be held Dec. 1 at the Stamford Italian Center. Tickets, priced at $60, are available by calling Joe Frattaroli at 322-6568.

Anzalone is a former Stamford High football player and joins six of his former SHS teammates as an Old Timers honoree. Following high school, Anzalone went on to be a two-way lineman at Southern Connecticut which participated in the NAIA Championship Playoff.

He began a coaching career at Stamford Catholic High School in 1961 and then became the first coach at Danbury's Immaculate High School in 1963 where he coached Chris Palmer, the current NY Giants quarterback coach.

In 1968 he was appointed athletic director and head football coach at Stamford Catholic and over 17 seasons he had a 107-76-5 record and coached three players who went on to the NFL. His teams won a state championship in 1978 and also appeared in two other state championship games.

Anzalone went on to coach at Gorton and Lincoln high schools in Yonkers and was also an assistant coach at Columbia University and then Susquehanna University. He is retired and living in Naples, Fla.
