Trinity Football Team Capsule

from The Stamford Times
Times Staff

Trinity Catholic Crusaders

2007 Record: 3-7, no playoffs

Coach/Years: Brian Fox/5th year.

Key Players Returning: Nick Cortese, Sr., FB-LB; Steve Scalero, Sr., QB-FS; Vince Carter, Jr., HB-CB; Jayme Antonetti, Jr., HB-OLB; Ralph Martello, Jr., G-LB; John Schule, Sr., OG-DL; Eddie Gonzalez, Sr., OL-DL; Max Corea, Sr., C;

Newcomers: Skeeter Jones, Sr., SE; Mike Rivas, Soph., RB; PJ Tusch, Soph., OL.

Outlook: Don't let the green and gold fool you, Crusader fans. This team is all about the blue -- the blue collar of hard work and the black and blue of delivering some hard hits. Like the other teams in the city this fall, Trinity Catholic returns a go-to player in the powerful running legs of Nick Cortese, a bruiser of a fullback who would just as well run through you than around you. If QB Steve Scalero can connect on a few passes to keep defenses honest then Cortese could be on his way to another 1,000 rushing season. More good news for the Crusaders: Four linemen who saw considerable time a year ago are back, so experience will help in the trenches. Trinity will have to get more consistent on defense, though. In its three wins, the Crusaders gave up 16 points a game, holding two teams to just one touchdown each. In its losses, however, TC was lit up for 34.7 ppg. Keep on eye on Skeeter Jones, too. In additon to a great football name, he might be on track to become the city's breakout star this fall.

Coach's Comment: "I like the way this team plays. They're not a super talented team, but they're a team that will have to bring their lunch box to work every day and they've had that attitude so far. I like coaching that type of team."
