The Nation Interview: Tim Parry, FCIAC Football Blogger

by Max Mercy
Chief Editor

Worth checking out is the FCIAC Football Blog written by Tim Parry. Just a local high school football fan, Parry has become the voice of the FCIAC.

Not only does Parry keep a close eye on local newspapers and team and league web sites, he is out in the field, attending scrimmages and games and talking to coaches and players. He offers daily updates from around the league as well as stories, features, fan polls, and great links to resources from all of Connecticut high school football.

This week Parry offers a touching yet relatable blog about his father, a respected retiree of New Canaan High. Writes Parry, "Like most, I'm sure I've taken my father for granted. Not that I ever meant to. I guess it happens."

The Nation's Max Mercy had a chance to speak with Mr. Parry this week about his blog and get his prediction for the Trinity v. St. Joseph game:

MM: When did you start The FCIAC Football Blog?

TP: October 1, 2005

MM: Why did you start The FCIAC Football Blog? Did you ever expect it to take up this much of your time?

TP: I was covering a conference for bloggers for my day job, and realized something. We were about to preach blogging to our readers, but weren't doing it ourselves. So I picked up some tips and took a speaker's advice – blog about something you know and feel you have an expertise in.

So the FCIAC Football Blog was my experiment to show people at my day job that was can be successful bloggers. Once people like Sean Patrick Bowley of The Post told me in November how many coaches and players were reading the blog, it became a lot more time consuming, but well worth it.

MM: What is your day job?

TP: I work for a pair of trade publications at Prism Business Media over in Springdale, writing and editing articles about marketing. Matter of fact, I used to work with at least two Trinity Catholic graduates – Marc Robustelli, who led us to the Thursday D-League Industrial League Softball Championship back in 2000 (I think we beat Coach Fox's team in the championship game!), and P.J. Kennedy, the Voice of the Crusaders!

MM: Despite your seemingly unbiased coverage of the league, do you still root for the Rams?

TP: Good question! Once thing I learned as a sportswriter years ago – no rooting in the press box. I've known head coach Lou Marinelli since his rookie season in 1981, and was his first waterboy. And my first professional gig was covering the Rams for the New Canaan Advertiser. So I quietly root for Lou, Bo Hickey and Joe Ditolla, who were my JV coaches then, but try to remain unbiased.

MM: Prediction for the Trinity v. St. Joseph game this week?

TP: Is it safe to say that no matter who wins, the Diocese of Bridgeport will be proud? No? I think this will be a close game, but Trinity returns more skill position players, so I'll say Trinity 28, St. Joe's 14.

MM: Have you seen Trinity play yet this year? Do they deserve their #8 CT Post ranking?

TP: I have not seen Trinity since the Green-Gold game, but I was very impressed with them. Coach Fox and company have done a fantastic job with this program. Everything I've been hearing points to Trinity contending for FCIAC and CIAC titles this season.

As for the Post ranking, does New Canaan deserve to be #7, Central #6, or Staples #5? I'd have to say they should be ranked #6, ahead of Central and New Canaan, but I also think it's better they start off underrated and keep inching up every week.

MM: Thanks Mr. Parry. We all look forward to reading the Blog this season.
