Crusader Hot Seat: Santiago "Teggy" Steele

By Scotty Smalls
Senior Analyst

Santiago "Teggy" Steele, a senior-to-be Defensive Tackle for the Crusaders, looks to be a key figure in the success of the 2006 Crusader Football Team. CrusaderNation.net Senior Analyst Scotty Smalls had a chance to catch up with Teggy to get his thoughts on spring ball and the upcoming season.

SS: Spring ball 2006: So it’s your last spring at TCHS strapping on the pads and heading out to Alumni Field; pick the most appropriate adjective that best describes your thoughts about the upcoming season: excited, nervous, relieved, anxious.

TS: The one to describe me as of right now would "excited" because I'm ready to go and do what it takes.

SS: How does this spring differ from your first venture into spring ball as a sophomore?

TS: Well, as a Senior I know everything that's going to happen and what to expect and I feel more relaxed. Also, I'm not coming in trying to fight for a starting spot but instead I'm trying to keep it.

SS: If you could do without one aspect of spring ball, what would it be and why?

TS: I would say all the running in the hot sun.

SS: On Green & Gold Saturday, who are you most likely to be lined up against? Out of 10 tries, how many times does this person stop you?

TS: Well, it will probably be Cory (Johnson) or Mario (Pirolozzi), and I don't think I'll get stopped...not to sound cocky.

SS: Role play: “Teggy, you are the GM of this year’s Gold team, who’s your first pick (besides yourself) to be a teammate against the Green?

TS: My first pick would be "NessQuick Vick" (Anes Koummal) because I think that any team he's on is going to win because he's the most talented kid on the team running and throwing the ball.

SS: As a Senior leader of this year’s team, a lot of pressure is coming your way that you did not have in the past, what’s your initial concern about carrying this load?

TS: Well the concern is doing the right thing because, as a Senior, if I do wrong the underclassmen will follow. I must set an example on and off the field.

SS: If you were to pick two non-seniors that are going to have breakout seasons, who would they be and why?

TS: I would pick John O'Leary to help us in the passing game because of the loss of Gene (DeVito), which is a big role to fill. Carlos (Romero) will be a threat running the ball with his speed.

SS: The word on the street is that the song“Wheelz of (Teggy) Steel(e)” by Outkast, is going to be heard quite a few times this season. Are you ready to live up to the billing of having your own theme song?

TS: I'm ready to live up to this anytime and hopefully it is heard quite a lot because that will mean I am getting the job done.

SS: Tell us “The Sportscenter Highlight" of your first three years at TCHS.

TS: My sophmore year when a made a hit on Kevin Fico that caused a fumble.

SS: What stands out as the biggest hurdle for the team to overcome in order to live up to your expectations?

TS: I think it is to not be an individual and get everything done as team. Also leadership will play a big part in order to be were we need to be.

SS: Of all the coaches, who would you warn the incoming freshmen about? What advice would you give to them?

TS: Coach Fox!!! - that he can be a very nice guy but once you're on the field you need to put up or shut up, 'cause he will take the smallest guy with no talent and put him on the field before a stud athlete who doesn't listen or messes up.

SS: Thanks, Teggy. Good advice. Good luck next year!
