March 17, 2006DeVito Makes DecisionAfter talking to dozens of coaches, visiting schools, and meeting with recruiters, Trinity Catholic wide receiver Gene DeVito has accepted a football scholarship from Assumption College in Worcester, MA. Assumption is an NCAA Division II school that plays in the Northeast 10 Conference against schools such as Bentley, Bryant, Southern Connecticut State, and Stonehill. Greyhounds Head Coach Cory Bailey seems to think DeVito can step in and play right away, assuming his knee has healed. DeVito is battling back from season-ending knee surgery that occurred in week six of his senior season. Throughout the 2005 season DeVito was being courted by many schools in the area. After the knee injury occurred, Gene was looked at mainly by Division II schools and seemed to be labeled Division I talent with a defect (his knee injury). After being named All-State wide receiver by the Connecticut Coaches Association, he narrowed down his choices to a few schools. When Assumption made the official offer, Gene decided that Worcester, MA, was the place for him. The Greyhounds have made a renewed commitment to football by building a brand new $4 million football field, adding Division I-AA schools to their schedule, stretching their geographic schedule, and making a commitment to a young, energetic staff. The small Catholic school is about a two-hour drive from Stamford and would be an enticing option for any student from Trinity, especially a student-athlete. DeVito hopes to open the door and blaze a trail for future Crusader football players.
