November 5, 2005Trinity Runs Over Wardefrom The Stamford Advocate FAIRFIELD - The frustration of a nightmare season boiled over for Tony Catapano Friday night. The first-year Fairfield Warde coach had harsh words for Trinity Catholic coach Bryan Fox following Catholic's 56-0 pounding of the Mustangs, who have been outscored 215-0 over the past four weeks. Catapano accused Fox of running up the score. "I've got 12 seniors that it's worth getting upset about when they get embarrassed 56-0 on their home field on senior night," Catapano said. Catholic didn't throw a pass in the second half and cleared the bench, but that didn't matter to the Warde coach, who wondered why the Crusaders kept running the ball wide on a defense that was helpless against the sweep. "I've been on that sideline; I know how it feels," said Fox. "The last thing I want to do is run it up. I understand their coach's frustration. But when kids break off 50-yard runs, you can't tell them to just go down." Seven different players scored touchdowns for Trinity, which improved to 5-3. In the second half, junior Ryan Durkin broke off a 58-yard touchdown run, sophomore Carlos Romero scampered 63 yards for a score, and junior Kyle Galatro had a 54-yard touchdown romp. Quarterback Anas Koummal carried Catholic to a 28-0 halftime lead by hitting Dave Macari with an 11-yard touchdown pass and running for scores of 1 and 3 yards. It was a dismal night for Warde. Catapano's own son, junior quarterback Maxx, was knocked out of the game with 1:40 remaining in the first period. He was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury. Senior Mike Jones came in at quarterback and was five-of-10 for 28 yards with two interceptions. Trinity intercepted three passes on the night. Warde's best drive of the game, early in the second half, ended at the Trinity 28 thanks to Matt Taccone's pickoff. Catholic has suffered key losses in recent weeks with injuries to wideout Gene DeVito and running back A.J. Nelson (sprained ankle). DeVito is out for the year with a torn ACL. "It's tough, because I was hoping to get him votes for all-state," Fox said. But there were plenty of players who stepped up against Warde. "We've got people who can play football. You saw Ryan Durkin come out tonight. He's a football player. Romero is going to be a good football player," Fox opined. "I'm not sure if we're living up to our talent just yet." Fox was also pleased with his defense. "We made the one-on-one tackles, which is something we're going to have to do next week against Stamford High," he said. On the other side of the field, Warde is just trying to survive the season. The team did not return a single letterman from last year. But as bad as the Mustangs have looked the past four weeks, they still own a 46-42 victory over Bassick. "I appreciate the effort they make every day," Catapano said about his 1-7 Mustangs. "They're great kids. They work as hard as anyone in the league."
